Two’s Company: How to Mix Prints Like a Pro

While my typical life motto is, “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color”, sometimes you need to mix it up. Quite literally to be exact. The fashion gods have named print mixing as one of the top trends for 2018.

But let’s be real, print mixing is always a thing, but with each season comes new ways to keep the look fresh. If the thought of rocking pattern, let alone two, makes you see stars, I have you covered with the no-nonsense guide to wearing prints like a street style pro.

Same print, different scale. Instinctually you may gravitate to two totally different prints, but pairing the same print in two different sizes keeps the look clean and chic. This works great with florals, stripes, and geometrics.

Inverse Prints: The no-fail way to mix print is the wearing the same print on top and bottom, but with the inverted color. Your eye focuses on the interesting color play, instead of merging two prints. The look feels bold, but sophisticated at the same time.

Let’s be kind, and not make our fashion gawkers dizzy. I love mellowing out a full print look with a solid layering piece. Think a draped leather jacket, black oversized sunnies, or handbag.

Color is key when choosing prints. They should share at least one color. An overall color scheme will ensure you don’t look like you got dressed in the dark. When making your selection go tonal, or choose colors that are on the opposite side of the color wheel. Complementary colors will guarantee compliments 🙂
