Powder Puff: The Statement Sleeve That Won’t Quit

Sleeves are having a moment. But here is the thing, they have been having a moment for like 5 freaking years. Calling statement sleeves a trend is the understatement of the decade. They have become a wardrobe staple, sitting alongside power players such as the trench coat and white tee. I am not going to lie, I was hesitant to invest in such sleeve extravagance at first, but the test of time has spoken. These voluminous varieties are going nowhere.

In retrospect, I wish I had bought high quality pieces from the start, instead of wading in the kiddie pool of Zara knockoffs. This realization is what led to this post – maybe I can still provide sage fashion wisdom to those who have not dove head first into the trend just yet. Here are my 5 favorite oversized sleeves and what to look for. Shop now or forever hold your peace.

Statement Top / Black Denim / Sandals / Earrings / Sunglasses / Bamboo Bag

1. If you’re on the fence, a crisp white blouse is the easiest way to transition into the trend. Subtle, yet effective.

2. If you are open to color, keep the palette neutral so it is wearable throughout the seasons. They work just as easy with a pair of denim as they do linen shorts.

3. Ellery is showcasing spirals, Jill Sander does ruching, but I think poet sleeves are a no-fail classic.

4. Square or high-collared necklines feel new!

5. Invest a piece that will wear well. Fabrication is key. Look for a high quality cotton blend so you are not a hot [wrinkly] mess or sweating profusely in polyester.

6. Pair with a wide leg trouser for work, straight leg denim for date night, or a midi slip skirt for brunch. They literally go with everything.
