In the Trenches: The Trench Coat is the Outerwear Pick of the Season

Let’s be real, the trench isn’t back. It never left, but now it’s ridiculously cool. See the difference?

Spring 2017 was the season of the trench coat. Pre-runway it was a quintessentially classic rain jacket. Post-runway it was the most coveted piece on the fashion crowd’s wish-list. So, what happened and why am I talking about it now?

Point one: for my fellow warm weather patrons, you don’t wear jackets in spring. A.) it doesn’t rain or B.) your makeup and deodorant will render useless in a solid 30 minutes if you do.

Point two: Fall 2017 & Spring 2018 continued to backup S17’s obsession with the mac, but with more swoon-worthy iterations that will get anyone on board.

So, what to look for? If you walk away with only one thing from this entire article, let it be this: oversized. Think Working Girl. We’re talking colossal lapels, exaggerated sleeves, and elongated hemlines. The best thing about this silhouette is it almost doesn’t matter what you’re wearing underneath. That in itself has become a trend within the trend. Take cue from the street style elite with a buttoned-up trench, cinched at the waist, and a killer boot. You can even pull the jacket off the shoulder for some unexpected sex-appeal.

For fabrication and color, the world is your oyster. Balenciaga pushed patent, The Row and Chloé ushered buttery leathers, and Trussardi painted the town red. Personally, I’m partial to the classics. Warm tobacco, classic khaki, and camel are better investment pieces for your wardrobe and bank account. I got you girl.

Trust me on this one, no longer reserved for the uptown crowd, the trench is now anyone’s game. Rain or shine, it will do all the talking this season. Shop my picks below!
