Cold Season: 5 Basics to Build Your Winter Wardrobe

I don’t think I speak for myself that when winter rolls around the main driver behind outfit decisions is comfort. Am I right or am I right? But just because we want to feel like we are walking around in flannel pajamas, doesn’t mean we have to look it.

When building your winter wardrobe it’s all about pieces that stand the test of temperature and time. So, I have laid the sartorial groundwork that will keep you chic and cozy AF all season long. Shop on friends!

Camel Coat / Turtleneck / Cropped Flare Denim / Sock Boot / Statement Earrings / Sunglasses

1. THE TURTLENECK

There is nothing like a high-quality turtleneck. Even though you’re covered up to your jawline, there is something uber chic and sexy about a well-fitted turtleneck. Tuck it into a pair of high-waisted, classic denim, pair under a silk slip dress and a leather jacket, or partner with a cropped A-line skirt for a dressier look.

2. THE STATEMENT EARRING

Statement Earrings are the yin to the yang of winter dressing. They are clutch with turtlenecks, statement coats, or even holiday parties. While tassels and geometrics are all the rage, a high-quality gold or silver earing with a high impact shape or size, will continue to ace the cost-per-wear calculation.

3. THE CLUTCH COAT

You have heard me preach about the trench, the shearling, and the faux fur coat for winter, and I haven’t gotten off my soapbox yet. The structure of the coat elevates every look and freshens up your wardrobe. My rule is always oversized. It keeps the look cool and leaves room for layering—chunky sweaters, biker jackets, etc.

4. THE SOCK BOOT

If there is one trend you invest in this season, it is the sock boot. It is literally everywhere, and I swear it goes with everything. Midi dress? Sock boot. Crop flare or straight leg denim? Sock Boot. Leather skirt? Sock boot. I do not want to take them off. Suede or a high shine leather is all the rage and for my vertigo friends, you can go high-rise to kitten heel. What feels fresh is a mid-calf height and pointed toe.

5. THE RAIN, SNOW, OR SHINE HAT:

When are hats not in? Never. It went from the floppy, to the wide brim, to the flat brim, to the beanie. This season it is the beret and baker’s cap. They add an instant cool factor to your look and let that dry shampoo go one more day. Double rainbow.
